Our story

U8J Cattle Co is family owned and operated by Warren, Meg, Charlie, Matilda & Jessica Salter. The Salter family’s passion for breeding quality Angus cattle started while managing a Custom feeding operation specialising in the production of long fed Angus and Wagyu cattle for export markets. Experiencing firsthand the importance of selecting quality genetics to drive successful cattle performance and financial outcomes, achieving customer satisfaction, meat eating quality expectations directly targeting Market specifications and consumer expectations.

U8J Cattle Co is home to MCJ Angus stud, we established our Angus stud breeding operations in 2015 by purchasing a quality line of 30 stud Angus PTIC heifers from Burenda Angus Stud, we continued to grow our female herd retaining select females produced using AI sires to access a broad spectrum of high performing genetics as well as purchasing more female genetics from Wattle Top, Alumy Creek & Sandon Glenoch Angus studs.

In 2019 the Salter family choose to commit 100% of their time and energy into breeding quality Angus stud cattle. Their commitment, vision and passion drives an obsession to produce Angus cattle that are:

  • Profitable

  • Fertile with calving ease

  • Carcass driven delivering consumer meat eating quality satisfaction

  • Feed efficient animal with red meat yield

  • Longevity, Structurally sound and adaptable to seasonal conditions.

  • Docile temperament

  • Bred in Queensland, Ready to Work

“U8J” Our brand is our stamp of quality! We implement a stringent selection process on our herd. We strongly believe in benefits of measuring, collecting, evaluating performance data and acting to make positive long term changes in our cow herd and the bulls we produce!

Our Vision

Applied to our Cow herd and Bulls

Profitable producing females

Profitable producing females with good growth, able to achieve joining weight min 350kg and Joined to calve before 24months. Must produce quality calves, with good growth and true to type for their genetic potential.

Females must be Fertile

Females must be Fertile with good calving ease, achieve pregnancy with AI joining and or a 6-week joining period, must deliver a live calf, raised to weaning and return PTIC every year.

Carcass driven females

Need to be 3 dimensional (have length, width and depth), be feminine and functional! Our cow herd is the engine room of our operation. Our females must meet our selection criteria as weaners and each year following. When a cow fails she is culled from our herd.

The female is selected for Longevity & a docile temperament is essential, when cows are culled for any reason other than age, we look at her breeding history and consider outcomes for any of her heifer progeny retained in our herd. Making an assessment on these females as potential exits. We have a strong focus on quality, and they need to meet our expectations on structural soundness, blight, udder soundness, fertility and temperament.

Fertile Bulls with calving ease

Fertile Bulls with calving ease, Carcass driven, need to be 3 dimensional (have length, Width and depth), Masculine and functional!

We make our bull breeding decisions each year utilising available Australian, North American AI sires and select walk on sires. The EBV figures we select for are low BW (<4), short GL (gestation Length) with calving ease and a good mix of carcass traits for growth and eating quality.

Bull Longevity & docility

Bull Longevity & docility, we apply a stringent selection process for our sale bulls based on “Our Vision” and the need for our bulls to perform, be Profitable, fertile, with calving ease! Well grown (weight for age), sound structure with shape, Queensland hair profile (less) and a great temperament to work with a long term outlook.

Bulls deliver a significant impact every year to the genetic profile of our herds!

Bulls need every opportunity to become a sire

Bulls need every opportunity to become a sire and deliver results across a diverse range of traits, they need to deliver better than 50% genetic improvement for select traits in a wide range of cow herds. We are using every tool available to us ensuring our bull have every opportunity to achieve our expectations. Commercial producers needs differ each and every year whether selecting for replacement heifers, MSA trade cattle, export OX, annual cull cow turnoff or making seasonal adjustments to our herd we want our bulls to perform well!

Animal Health Program

We are committed to offering fully prepared healthy immune ready sires and females ready to go working! To achieve our animal health goals we back the science and follow industry best practice.

Cattle Health preps & vaccinations

All cattle in the U8J herd are 2 shot vaccinated with 7IN1 and Pestigard We are working toward our herd being vaccinated for 3 day.  At this stage all Bulls and T heifers are fully vaccinated for 3 Day.  All female cattle receive annual boosters for 7in1 & Pestigard post calving and pre joining.

Bulls are also vaccinated with 2 shots of vibrio and one dose of Rhinogard (IBR), tick blooded at weaning and receive annual boosters for 7in1, Pestigard and Vibrio.

All cattle are drenched regularly and we use fly and biting/sucking parasite controls as required.

Steer buy back offer

We are excited to be offering a steer progeny buy back incentive, aiming to measure and promote performance of steers sired by U8J Bulls.

Our Environmental Vision

Implementing environmentally sustainable and future focused agricultural practices, minimising our carbon emissions.

U8J Cattle co is located 15km east of Dalby on Dalby Nungil road in the Irvingdale locality.  We incorporate an area of Myall creek flood plain rolling back into undulating box and Brigalow ridges with the Bunya Mountains to our northeast. We are focusing on incorporating Regenerative Ag and farming practices on our land. We are in the process of developing Leuceana and Progarties Desmantis as summer legumes with improved perennial pastures for our summer grazing rotations and using mixed species cover crops incorporating legumes, annual cereals and brassicas for cash cropping and grazing in our winter rotations. We have also changed from our traditional fixed time set stock grazing programs to matching our stocking rates to our carrying capacity, moving the stock regularly through the grazing areas. Maximising ground cover, plant production, water retention and soil health.

Commercial focus

We understand the day to day challenges operating a commercial cattle enterprise, we value your feedback on how our bulls perform in your operation and are here to help in any way we can to promote your success and learn from the challenges.

Our Brand Satisfaction and follow up support

Our production focus starts the day a calf is born, we apply our animal health and wellbeing programs to give all animals every chance to perform for our customers when they go to work! We understand that things don’t always go as planned! In light of this we want feedback to confirm we are on the right track and if you purchase a U8J stud animal and it does not perform to the standards we expect, talk to us! You return the animal for a replacement of the same value or a credit at the following year’s sale.

We are selecting genetics to deliver a live calf with growth that will continue to perform as replacement breeders or as a commercial weaner, backgrounder, feeder cattle, domestic MSA graded or export carcasses that are feed efficient, adaptable to seasonal conditions, able to finish on grass or in feedlot conditions, meeting market specifications.

We value our quality systems and know if it’s not recorded it does not exists and if you don’t measure it you can’t improve it!
